Reading Initiatives
Accelerated Reader
From September 2014, the Library has been supporting KS3 students using the Accelerated Reader programme from Renaissance Learning. Accelerated Reader produces an average of two years' reading age growth in just one academic year whilst promoting reading for pleasure. It's a powerful tool for monitoring and managing independent reading practice, and for helping to create reading programmes to meet the needs of every student.
The programme allows every student to pick a book at their own level. Once they have finished reading the book, they are asked to complete a short quiz on a computer; the passing of this quiz indicates that the student has understood what they have read. You can visit AR BookFinder at www.arbookfind.co.uk to conduct a search of all available books with AR quizzes.
BookBuzz
Inspiring a love of reading is of great importance at Davenant. Every year we take part in a reading programme from BookTrust, called BookBuzz. The programme supports our school to encourage reading for pleasure, by giving students the opportunity to choose and keep their own book.
Year 7 students are given the opportunity to choose a book to keep from a list of 12 titles suitable for 11 - 13-year-olds and selected by a panel of experts.
