Year 7 Transition

Welcome to your transition to Year 7 webpage. We designed this page to share useful information with you ahead of the beginning of your Davenant journey.

You can return to this page as many times as you wish over the coming weeks, and we hope that this helps you to feel a little less worried and a bit more excited about the start of secondary school!

Below you will find a video from your Head of Year, Mr Glynn, who will introduce himself and explain his role. You will also find videos from two of our current Year 7 students, who will share a little about their first year at Davenant. We’ve included a video tour of the school, so that you can see what each part of the school looks like before you arrive, and a map, to help you familiarise yourself with the building.

There are also the names and photos of a few key staff members, information about your induction day, your first day in September and, maybe most importantly, a frequently asked questions section, which includes the answers to a number of questions which you might have. The inspiration for these questions was our current Year 7 students. These are the things they wish they had known when they started last September!

We hope that you find all of this information useful. Bookmark the page on your web-browser so that you can visit it as many times as you want to, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Induction Day Plan

Induction Day is on Friday 27th June. This is an amazing opportunity for you to come and visit Davenant and see what a typical school day is like. During the day, you will attend some lessons, have tours of the school, and have the opportunity to spend time with the other people in your year group. The rough plan for the day is included below:

9am – Arrival and assembly with the rest of your year-group in the main school hall. Mr Glynn and some other staff will meet you at the gate and bring you to the hall.

9.30am – Tours of the school led by our student ambassadors

10.00am – PE lesson assisted by our Sports’ Leaders

10.50am – Break-time

11.20am – Lesson (this could be any subject on the curriculum)

12.10pm – Lunchtime

1.30pm – Lesson (this could be any subject on the curriculum)

2.20pm – Introduction to our school ethos and values in the hall

3.00pm – Dismissal

Your first day in September

Your first day as official Davenant students in Wednesday 3rd September. There are hardly any other students in on this day so school will be very quiet. It is a great opportunity for you to learn where things are before it feels a bit busier.

On this day, you will be taking part in the following activities:

9.00am – Arrive to school and line up with your form group. We will show you exactly where to go on this day. You will line up in the same place that we do fire-drills before going into the hall for your first assembly of the year. You start school a bit later than usual on this day. Usually, you will need to be at school by 8.30am.

9.45am – if you are using our biometric system to pay for your food in the canteen, we will spend some time collecting your fingerprint. During this time, we will also take a photo of your whole form, and your form tutor, in the hall. We take another photo in five years’ time so that you can see how much you have changed! Very often, you keep the same form tutor for the whole time you are at Davenant so you can see how much they have aged too!

11.00 – Break-time

11.30am – Prayer writing with our Christian Union. We have a number of very popular Christian Unions and Lawrence, who runs our KS3 CU is going to introduce himself to you and then help you to write a prayer for our Year 7 Welcome Service, which happens in mid-September.

12.20pm – Lunchtime

1.20pm – Form time. During this hour, you will get to know your form tutor and the rest of your form a bit better.

2.20pm – Freshers’ Fayre. There are a number of clubs, activities, sporting and musical opportunities at Davenant. For your final hour of the day, you will visit the hall where representatives from these clubs will be able to tell you more information. You can collect invitations and take them home as a reminder of when and where to attend the activities you like the look of!

3.20pm – Dismissal.

Uniform and equipment

Being a student at Davenant means wearing your uniform with pride. We expect you to wear the correct uniform every day and to ensure that you are fully equipped when you come to school. Below, we’ve included a photo of exactly what your uniform should look like every day and what your PE kit should look like whenever you have a PE lesson.

Below is a list of equipment you are expected to bring to school every day:

At least 2 blue or black pens (one spare)
Pencil
Sharpener
Eraser
30cm ruler
Pair of compasses
Protractor
Calculator
Set of colouring pencils
Glue stick
Reading book
Additional equipment for Art & Design, which can be purchased through the school

Our ethos, values and expectations

At Davenant, we want to nurture every part of you as a person: your mind, your body and your spirit. We do this by providing you with excellent teaching, great pastoral care and also lots of other opportunities. We expect you to conduct yourself in a certain way and treat others as you would expect to be treated yourself. Our school values are to be: Compassionate, Open Minded, Respectful, Determined and Inclusive. We will teach you all about our values over the coming weeks but now is a good time to start thinking about what each of those words mean and how you can model them in your daily lives.

Frequently asked questions:

Below are some of the things which our current Year 7s wished they could have asked before they started at Davenant:

  1. Where can we go at break-time and lunchtime?

At break-time and lunchtime, we have designated areas where you can eat and drink and other places where you can play or chat to your friends. In September, we will show you exactly where you can go to eat and where you can’t.

We have a big site, including a huge field and a woodland path and most of it is available for you to play in.

At break-time you will queue up outside to buy food from our canteen window or you can bring your own snacks to school. At lunchtime, you can either come into the canteen to buy your lunch or queue up outside to buy food from our canteen window. If you bring a packed lunch, you can either bring that into our canteen and eat there or eat in our sandwich area or in some designated places outside.

We have a number of Midday Assistants who will supervise you at lunchtime as well as your Head of Year, Mr Glynn, and a number of the Senior Leadership Team.

  1. What is the one-way system and how does it work?

We have a one-way system in most of our corridors so that moving between lessons is safe for all of our students. We will show you exactly what the one-way system looks like when you start in September but there are also big signs on the walls to tell you if you are going the correct way down a corridor!

  1. What are trust points and how do I keep them?

At the beginning of the year, you will be given 100 Trust Points. This is our way of showing you that we totally trust you and in return for keeping your trust points, you will win prizes and awards and have access to amazing reward trips!

You will lose trust points if you are repeatedly late to lessons (not in the first couple of weeks!) or repeatedly forget to do your homework, come to school without correct uniform or equipment or behave in a way which is not appropriate at school. If you do lose some trust points, your form tutor, Mr Glynn and the rest of the pastoral team will work with you to regain your points so that you can get back to 100.

  1. What are credits and how do I get them?

Credits are awarded by your teachers and any other staff at Davenant for exceptional work or conduct. You might receive a credit for a good piece of homework or for helping out a friend. Credits win you awards, school badges and access to reward trips. Try to get as many credits as you can!

  1. What will happen if someone is unkind to me?

We do not tolerate people being unkind to others in our community. If someone says or does something unkind, you should tell your form tutor, Mr Glynn or Ms Page or Ms Khan. You can tell any other member of staff, who will pass the message on to one of the people mentioned. We will speak to you about what has happened and then deal with it appropriately.

  1. Will I get in trouble if I get lost and I’m late to my lessons?

No! Davenant is a big school and you probably will feel a little bit lost for the first few days. You will not get in trouble if you are late to your lessons until you’ve learnt your way around. If you do get lost, you can ask anyone you see in the corridor and they will help you.
