Teacher Training

Davenant Foundation School’s many strengths and areas of excellence make it a perfect environment for the training of teachers.

Davenant works with five university providers who embrace PGCE courses in a variety of subjects. The Institute of Education for History, Geography and Religious Education, Kings College for Science, Goldsmiths College for Art, Middlesex University for Drama, Art, Business Studies, English, Music, Citizenship and Physical Education (with partnerships with our Sports College) and the University of East London for Mathematics and Modern Foreign Languages.

Mr T A Hounslow, Director of Training School and AST

If you are a graduate, have achieved English and Mathematics at GCSE Grade C and above, and are aspiring to train to become a teacher, please contact Trevor Hounslow via his PA, Jenny Marshall (jennym@davenant.com)

GTP places at Davenant attract a salary grant of £15,000.

In addition, the School works with the Open University and the Institute of Education to provide Associate Courses for potential trainees who wish to sample a few days in school in order to help decide whether teaching is the right choice for a career change - or even for a first career.

The School is able to apply for Graduate Registered Teachers Programme placements, which is “on the job” training which places all training in our care for one year and leads to Qualified Teacher Status. All applicants must have a degree with subject specialisation and GCSE Mathematics and English at Grade C or above. Places are allocated by Essex as a Recommending Body with “priority needs” pecking order, i.e. Science, Mathematics and ICT. There may be a salary grant attached to a successful application.

The school has fully trained and experienced mentors in all subjects and they are given time to support the trainees, whatever the route, in to teacher training. There is a dedicated programme of Professional Studies, which is delivered by experienced colleagues each Wednesday.

The school is able to call on the experience of three other Advanced Skills Teachers (besides Trevor Hounslow). They are David Paul (Mathematics), Jane Farrow (Physical Education) and Tremaine Baker (History) who all teach at the School but have a day’s Outreach working in other Essex Schools.

At this moment in time, the Headteacher is Chairman of the Middlesex University Partnership Forum and Mr Hounslow works with the London Providers Group which has representatives from the University providers of ITT and several schools and whose purpose is to harmonise Mentoring and Professional Studies programmes within the London and Home Counties areas.

This year the school has trained three GTP’s in English, Psychology and Physical Education and provided placements for 34 PGCE trainees. There have been four Associate Training Placements, through the Institute of Education and Kent University. The 2006-07 staffing contains four NQT’s who trained at the school. This will mean that there will be 11 teachers at the school in 2006-07 that have been trained by the school.
